Belgium HotelsConnect Speed vs. Modem Speed

Why is my modem showing me connecting to the internet at 115,200?

When you install an internal modem in your PC, it represents two products. First a connection from the PC tothe communications port called a COM port or serial port and second is the modemitself. Each connection has a speed rating.  The Modem connection istechnically call the Data Communication Equipment (DCE) and the Communicationsport is the Data Terminal Equipment (DTE). Some modems are shipped with asetting to show DTE speeds in the windows connection manager. When you connect tothe internet the most important connection speed is the DCE or Modem connectionspeed. This is the connection speed that was negotiated by your modem and ours.It is not necessarily the speed at which our systems are currently connected.

DCE connections speeds are normally like 22000, 24000, 26400, 28800, 33600,45000; however these speeds can vary and may be anything. DTE ports speeds are hard codedto a certain level.  DTE ports speeds are 19200, 38400, 57600 or115,200. It may surprise you when you make a connection and your speeds arerated at 115,200 with only a 33.6KB modem. In this case you are actually lookingat the DTE speed. DTE speeds can be set in Windows Control panel, Modems.Setting your DTE speeds beyond your modem DCE speed capabilities will notincrease your overall speeds.

When you make a connection to the internet with Windows 9x, the dialupnetworking component of Windows go to the modem and looks at certain settingsfor connection speeds. If you are using a standard modem driver and not onespecific to your modem or your modem registers are not set to view DCE, it willshow you the DTE speed of the COM port.

The Fix
There is nothing wrong with looking at DTE speeds; outside of the cosmeticissues or not be able to determine your real connect speeds, it won't hurtanything. However many people are interested in at least the starting connectionspeed for their internet connection. Unfortunately there is no one fix for allmodems. Each modem manufacture can use different methods of setting modemcommands. Here are a couple of things you can do:

  1. Milan hôtelsInstall the driver for your specific modem. If you run with the generic "Standard Modem" it is very likely you will display DTE speeds. Most modems come with a modem driver diskette, CD or better yet download the latest drivers from the manufactures website. You can go into Control Panel>System>Device Manager and click properties on your Standard Modem. Then go to the drivers tab and there should be an update driver button. Make sure you have the exact brand and model of your modem and click update driver and give it the path to your new drivers. Windows will probably make you reboot. Try your connection again.
ERROR MSG (If you download the drivers, make sure you unzip them before you use them)
