1973 saw Gregg Rolie and and Neal Schon (of Santana) teamed up with Ross Valory (Frumious Bandersnatch and the Steve Miller Band) and Prairie Prince (of The Tubes fame) to form what would be come the quintessential rock band Journey.
Prairie Prince left in 1974, which allowed Journey to bring in Aynsley Dunbar, also coming on board was rhythm guitarist George Tickner. Both played on the first Journey album self entitled Journey. George Tickner left within a short time, and the band was back to being a quartet.
Journey continued to garner success playing to live audiences, but record sales lagged behind critical success as a live act. The follow-up albums, Look Into The Future and Next, did not sell as well as the record company would have liked, and even though Journey played to packed venues across the United States Journey was told to change direction a bit or lose their contract.
Herbie Herbert, Journey's manager, began a search for the front man to take Journey forward. Robert Fleischman began work with Journey in 1977 but left do to loyalty to his manager, leaving Journey looking for a new front man all over again. Shortly thereafter demo tape of a band known as Alien Project appeared on Herbie Herbert's desk. Alien Project featured the vocals of a relatively unknown vocalist by the name of Steve Perry, and the rest as they say is HISTORY!
Steve Perry's beginnings with Journey were rocky, with both Neal Schon and Gregg Rollie balking at the idea of a golden voiced front man changing Journey to a more mainstream sound and away from their rock-fusion roots.
