| Interview with Trevor Phipps - May 20th 2002 |
| Trevor Phipps, please answer these questions asap for my column or I will eat your soul. My soul has already been sold......tough luck for you huh? What else would you like to eat? 1. You guys just got back from your first European tour. Let us know how that went for you guys. European kids are very respectful of hardcore and metal bands. Every show we got treated like royalty. For example the promoters would get us a "pre-dinner" meal with tons of sandwiches, snack foods and drinks and then later we would get a hot meal (punk rock stew usually). We also got put up in hotels every night for free. Such an amazing thing. We did miss being home though because for the most part the food does suck over there...even though it is free at the shows. McDonalds became our best friend, and we usually hate McDonalds in the U.S.. Subway is our saviour back home- 2. Let us know about your split release that you put out for the European tour with the band Liar. The split will be released by Eulogy Recordings in the U.S., Alveran Records in Europe and also on vynil by Sobermind Records (also from Europe) in late May. hotel review SelfossIt will feature four songs by each band. Three new ones from us "Endless", "Internal War" and "The Charm". We also put our original demo track of "My Desire" on the cd. In my opinion it sounds better than the version on "Stings". The material on the split cd is definitely more in a metal direction for us, but we keep a similar formula to our original sound with crushing and original breakdowns. We have to keep it heavy. 3. Do you guys have any new material in the works for another full length record yet? What can we expect, direction wise, from the new material? We already have a few songs written for another full length, but we are not exactly sure when we want to release it. We want to take our time and make a "flawless" record that we will enjoy writting, playing and listening to. The stuff already written is even more metal than what is on the split cd. We still have a while to go before we record again so only time will tell what it will sound like. We do not want to rush into anything. 4. How is your new bass player John working out for you guys? He eats cobb the long way. 5. You guys have been touring like madmen as of late. What would you say you're favorite tour has been so far and why? I would have to say the Poison the Well tour this winter through the midwest and west coast was the best tour for us. We got along great with them and our other tour buddies Sworn Enemy and Spark Lights the Friction. Not to mention the shows were huge every night. No one got sick, nothing was stolen.....just a great tour altogether....besides a couple of car wrecks.....stories for another time. 6. What new bands are you excited about that are up and coming in the underground scene right now? Obviously from Western, MA there is Flatlined and Light is the Language. Both have amazing musicians in the bands and endless potential for metal and metal-core. Also I like a band from Canada called "Rise Over Run", a band from San Diego "As I Lay Dying" and a band from Tucson, Arizona "The Bled". Watch out for them in 2002 and 2003. 7. What cds are in your cd player right now? Any new records out that you've fallen in love with? cheap hotels in BathWell, we were lucky enough to score an advanced copy of the new Killswitch Engage record over in Europe. I swear it was the only thing that kept us sane with all the long rides, tiny van and shitty food. I wish Killswitch the best of luck....the songs are put together extremely well and Jesse has an amzing singing voice. 8. Do you think it's dangerous to teach a chimpanzee kung fu? Would he use it against you if provoked? I would fuck up any chimpanzee if he tried to use kung fu on me. You forget, Unearth is trained very well in Bukakee, session that is! 9. Boxers or briefs? Boxers and boxer briefs when I am being "athletic". Just to hold the stones in place. 10. Would you drink a case of Moxie for ten bucks? 11. Any last comments or concerns that you would like to offer to the viewing public? Stay away from punk rock stew. Answer them or I shall devour your first born child. How many first born children have you eaten? It looks like a few......... - Scott "I make Toole do everything" Lee |
