President Bush's Stance On Democracy Based on Solid Research, New Group Says

The worldwide realization of the ideals of democracy as outlined by President George Bush in recent speeches is based on solid social science research, according to the American International Relations Society (AIRS).
The group was created in January 2005 to educate the public about research findings which support the fact that democracies do not make war against each other, and they do not murder their own citizens.
"Our mission is to promote and publicize historical research on humanconditions, thereby supporting the case for preserving and advancing democracy throughout the world," said Rick Plavidal of Ridgway, Colorado, an entrepreneur, and a founding member of the group.
"It is important to bring valid and relevant research to the table when setting national policy and this is what President Bush has done in announcing his visionary forward strategy of freedom," Plavidal said.
Social science research conducted over the last twenty-five years demonstrates three important points:
Democracy Ends War:Democracies do not make war on other democracies and rarely engage in lesser violence against each other. Of the 371 recorded wars since 1816, there has been no war between two clear democracies! Even when this study is expanded to include all incidents of violence between countries over the same period, there have been only three minor incidents between democracies.
Democracy Reduces Violence: The more a nation is democratically free, the less severe it's foreign and internal political violence. During the 20th century, an estimated 174 million (yes, 174,000,000) people have been murdered by governments. This is four times more than the 35 million combat war deaths in the same period, and none of this democide has involved liberal democracies murdering their own citizens. The contrast between government murder statistics comparing democratic and non-democratic regimes is astounding. Virtually zero murdered for all liberal democracies versus millions (or even over ten million for Mao's China, Stalin's Soviet Union, and Hitler's Germany.)
Democracy Promotes Prosperity: One of the corollaries stemming from basic research is that democratic freedom promotes wealth and prosperity, and an end to famine. The most prosperous nations are all democracies. No democracy has ever had a famine.
Summary: If the world were to become totally democratic, war could be completely eliminated; there would be less violence; democide would be ended. Famines would be eliminated and mass impoverishment would be greatly reduced. Already the rapid growth in the number of democracies to about 117 out of 192 nations has sharply reduced the amount of violence in the world, as has been documented by organizations monitoring war and violence.
We have come together to present these important facts in a clear, simple, straightforward way so that all can understand," Plavidal said.
