EXAMINATION INFORMATION

The Structural Pest Control Board administers examinations to individualsmeeting the proper qualifications at many times during each calendar year. Whensetting up the examination schedule we attempt to provide examination dates in awide variety of geographic area so that everyone has the opportunity to attendexamination sessions near them. In addition exam session are held in Austin,Dallas, and House every three months.

The deadline dates are final and no exceptions will be made. Faxedapplications will not be accepted, period.

The examinations are administered in the following categories:

Pest control - Inspection and/or control of pests in and around homes,businesses, and industries. This category shall include persons engaged in theinspection and/or control of insect pests or pest animals which may invadehomes, restaurants, stores, and other buildings, attacking their contents orfurnishings or being a general nuisance, but do not normally attack the buildingitself, as for example, roaches, silverfish, ants, flies, mosquitoes, rats,mice, etc.

Termite control - Inspection and/or control of termites and otherwood-destroying organisms. This category includes persons engaged in theinspection and/or control of termites, beetles, or other wood destroyingorganisms by means other than fumigation in buildings, including homes,warehouses, stores, docks, or any other structures.

Lawn and ornamental - Inspection and/or control of pests of ornamentalplants, shade trees, and lawns. This category includes persons engaged in theinspection and/or control of pests or diseases of trees, shrubs, or otherplantings in a park or adjacent to a residence, business establishment,industrial plant, institutional building, or street.

Structural fumigation - This category includes persons engaged in pestinspection and/or control through fumigation of structures not primarilyintended to contain food, feed or grains.

Commodity fumigation cheap hotels in Kos - This category includes persons engaged in pestinspection and/or control through fumigation of commodities and/or structuresnormally used to contain them. Persons in this category may be licensed by theTexas Department of Agriculture for fumigation of raw agricultural commodities.

Weed Control - This category includes persons engaged in the inspectionand/or control of weeds around homes and industrial environs.

Wood Preservation - That phase of pest control that involves the additionof preservatives to wood to extend the life of wood products by protecting themfrom damage caused by insects, fungi, and marine borers. Such wood products willinclude, but not be limited to, crossties, poles, and posts. This category isintended only for use by those persons using wood preservatives that may beclassified as restricted use.

Individuals seeking to be licensed as certified applicators are required topass the General Standards examination prior to license.

  1. Federal and state laws that regulate the industry
  2. Recognition of pests and pest damage
  3. Pesticide labels and label comprehension
  4. Pesticide safety
  5. Environmental protection
  6. Application equipment and techniques
  7. Pesticide formulations and actions
  8. Emergency procedures and pesticide cleanup
  9. Procedures for immediate reporting of spills and misapplications
  10. Basic principles of mathematics, chemistry, toxicology and entomology
  11. Non-Chemical pest control techniques, including biological, mechanical, and prevention techniques.

All categories are offered at each exam date, both for technician and forcertified applicator.

Examination fees are $40.00 per exam. License fees do not have to bepre-paid, however the $40.00 exam fee for each exam taken including the GeneralStandards exam must be submitted with your completed exam application.Failure to do so will delay processing. Upon receipt of your completed examapplication (indicating categories requested and date/location requested) andreceipt of the proper examination fees the SPCB office will send you aconfirmation notice. If you cannot attend the examination period assigned toyou, you may either reschedule or receive a refund if you notify the Board, inwriting, 10 days prior to the scheduled exam date. If you do not notifythe board in time, the testing fees will be forfeited.

If a medical emergency arises or a death in the family occurs you will needto notify the Board, in writing, with the proper documentation. Thisdocumentation will need to be submitted to our office, postmarked no later than10 working days after your scheduled examination date. For a medical emergency,a doctor's excuse will be needed. For a death in the family, a notarized letterwill be needed. BUSINESS OR WORK SCHEDULES ARE NOT CONSIDERED EMERGENCIES.

If you fail an exam in a category, you must skip one test date beforeretaking that specific category exam. If you fail the general standardsexamination you may re-take the general examination each time it is offeredprovided you register by the registration deadline date. Exam fees must be paidfor re-taking failed exams.

Things to know when testing:

  1. Be there promptly at the assigned date and time.
  2. Bring two #2 pencils.
  3. You must bring your scheduling letter with you. You will not be allowed to sit for the exam without it.
  4. You are allowed to bring a calculator; however, specialty calculators are prohibited.
  5. Fumiguides will be provided if needed.
  6. You must bring a picture ID in order to be allowed to test.
  7. Identification of pictured specimens is required on all category exams. The number of people at a table at any one time is limited depending on the exam site.
  8. If you are not able to attend the scheduled exam date you will need to notify the examination division in writing10 DAYS prior to the scheduled exam date or the exam fee will be forfeited.
  9. In cases where a medical emergency arises or a death in the family occurs you will need to notify the board, in writing with a doctors statement or a notarized statement for a death in the family.
  10. Notification concerning your assigned examination times, along with a map, is sent two weeks prior to the examination date. If you have not received your notification letter at least one week prior to your requested exam date, please check with the SPCB office. Please do not call the SPCB office the day of the exam to find out where to go.
  11. If you are testing to add a category to an existing license you will not receive a new license reflecting the passing scores unless you pay the reprinting fee.
  12. All exams are Closed Book, Multiple choice and True/False.
